Kamala Harris’ Chances of Winning Election Rise After Fox News Interview

The odds on Vice President Kamala Harris winning the 2024 presidential election were cut by two leading bookmakers following her Fox News interview on Wednesday, during which she discussed immigration, transgender health care and perceived threats to American democracy with host Bret Baier.
Prior to the interview, which was broadcast at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Betfair and Paddy Power offered odds of 11/8 (42.1 percent) on Harris securing an electoral victory in November. However, as of 5:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, the vice president’s chances had improved to 5/4 (44.4 percent).
Harris’ Fox News interview took place amid signs that her campaign has lost some momentum, with the polling website 338Canada giving her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, a 51 percent chance of securing the White House—up from 47 percent last week. The vice president is reportedly in talks to appear on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, which is known to be popular with young men.
While Betfair and Paddy Power both cut Harris’ odds of victory after Wednesday’s interview, the vice president’s chances remained unchanged with a number of other bookmakers. On Wednesday afternoon, Bet365 and Sky Bet offered odds of 13/10 (43.5 percent) and 5/4 (44.4 percent), respectively, on a Harris victory. They remained the same on Thursday morning.
Newsweek contacted representatives of the Harris and Trump campaigns for comment via email on Thursday outside regular office hours.
During Harris’ interview with Baier, the pair spared over immigration policy after the Fox News host asked the vice president, “How many illegal immigrants would you estimate your administration has released into the country over the last three and a half years.”
Harris responded, “We have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired,” before Baier cut in to ask about Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ statement that 85 percent of people apprehended along the U.S.-Mexican border had since been released.
The Democratic presidential hopeful then interjected, “I’m not finished,” before discussing Biden’s unsuccessful U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 and accusing Trump of torpedoing a bipartisan migration deal earlier this year.
Harris also said in the interview that a second Trump term could undermine the rule of law, adding that the Republican nominee was unable to “handle criticism.”
“You and I both know that he has talked about turning the American military on the American people,” Harris continued.
Baier also challenged the vice president over the provision of transgender health care for people in prison, referencing a Trump campaign ad that raised the topic.
The vice president said, “I will follow the law,” adding that federal regulations mean equal access to health care is a legal requirement.
According to the election website 538, as of Wednesday, Harris had a lead of 2.4 percentage points over Trump. With less than 20 days before the election, the race remains too close to call.
